As a parent of a child diagnosed with learning disabilities, Dr Campbell McBride was acutely aware of the difficulties facing other parents like her, and she has devoted much of her time to helping these families. Natural Mitigation Strategies for the Impact of Environmental Toxins on Neurodevelopment
Media articles and websites carry stories about how the naturopathic concept of detoxification is just one big scam perpetrated on an ignorant and gullible public. Touting the health benefits of detoxification particularly catches the ire of the scientific fundamentalist websites. Even Prince Charles was caught up in the controversy when his Duchy brand launched a range of herbal detox tinctures in 2009. But there is mounting evidence that environmental toxin exposure can affect a range of health problems, including neurodevelopment, leading to or exacerbating conditions such as low-functioning autism, ADHD and other learning disabilities. In this presentation, Kerry will review the clinical evidence supporting the role of key herbs and some nutrients in dealing with environmental toxins. The review will be presented in the context of the four principles of dealing with toxin exposure, namely avoid, protect, repair and eliminate. To further place some of this data into context, there will also be a brief highlighting of the very recent evidence clearly showing the potential impact of diverse environmental insults in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Professor Kerry Bone is an industry leader and innovation driver, directing the research program at MediHerb. As recognition of this role (in conjunction with his research colleagues), MediHerb was awarded the American Botanical Council’s (ABC’s) Varro E. Tyler Award for excellence in Phytomedicinal (Herbal) Research in 2016. He is co-author of more than 40 scientific papers on herbal research, including original research and systematic reviews and currently serves as the only Australian member on the editorial board of the journal Phytomedicine, the top herbal research journal in the world. Over three decades, Kerry has also published several hundred articles on herbal therapy in professional journals. As part of his educational role, Kerry is Principal of the Australian College of Phytotherapy and also Adjunct Professor at New York Chiropractic College, providing input into their postgraduate applied nutrition program. Kerry has written or co-written six popular textbooks on herbal medicine, including the second edition of Principles and Practice of Phytotherapy with Simon Mills, which was awarded the 2013 James A. Duke Excellence in Botanical Literature Award by the American Botanical Council (ABC). His seventh book on Functional Herbal Therapy is with the publishers and expected to be available in mid-2021. He still maintains a busy herbal practice in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia where he has been in continuous service for more than 36 years. In 2015 Kerry’s lifelong contribution to the field of herbal medicine was recognised with his receiving the prestigious Lady Cilento award from the complementary medicine industry in Australia.
