Gut Health and Health Challenges
with James Neuewenschwander, MD
Overview
How does the developing gut microbiome influence immunity, brain function and chronic disease in children?
In this presentation, James Neuenschwander, MD explores the important role of the pediatric gut microbiome and why it can be especially vulnerable to environmental influences during early development. He examines the close relationship between the microbiome, immune system and brain, and how disruptions in microbial balance may contribute to complex chronic health challenges.
The session also looks at conditions associated with immune dysfunction and microbiome disruption, including autism, PANS/PANDAS, allergies, asthma, eczema, digestive disorders and autoimmunity. Dr. Neuenschwander discusses current microbiome testing and practical strategies for supporting microbial balance through nutrition, prebiotics and a systems biology approach.
Objectives
- Understand how the gut microbiome develops in early life and why the pediatric microbiome may be less resilient than the adult microbiome.
- Explore the relationship between the gut microbiome, immune system and brain in children’s health.
- Recognise how disruptions in the microbiome may contribute to immune dysfunction and complex chronic health conditions.
- Review current approaches to microbiome testing, including their strengths and limitations.
- Learn practical strategies for supporting microbial balance through nutrition, prebiotics and a systems biology approach.
